How To Install the SPC Flooring

It is the responsibility of the person installing the SPC flooring to inspect all flooring prior to installation. If, during the inspection, the installer or buyer believes that the SPC flooring is the wrong colour, improperly manufactured, substandard or of incorrect gloss, the flooring should not be installed. Contact the retailer from whom you purchased the SPC flooring immediately.

1. Determine how you want the SPC flooring to operate. Usually for plank products, the floor is the length of the room. There may be exceptions, as this is entirely dependent on preference.

2. To avoid narrow plank widths (less than 50 mm) or short plank lengths (less than 30 mm) near walls/doors, it is important to do some pre-planning. Using the width of the room, calculate how many full planks can be accommodated in that area and the remaining space that needs to be partially covered with planks.

3. Start with a whole plank in the left hand corner of the room with the tongue side and end toward the wall. Lay the first row of planks along a chalk line and trim to fit to the wall allowing a 6.50mm expansion space. If starting the first row with a whole width plank it will be necessary to trim the tongues next to the wall, then place the cut ends next to the wall. To trim the planks, use a utility knife and a straight edge to score the top surface of the plank, and then bend it downward to separate the pieces, you can also use a VCT (Vinyl Composition Tile) cutter for end cuts only; a table saw also works well for both end and length cuts.

4. Align and connect the end joints of the first row of planks. Insert the planks into the grooves while holding them at an angle of 20° to 30° to the floor. Apply pressure inwards and downwards until the boards are locked together. Use spacers between the long side and the end of the plank near the wall to maintain the extension space.

5. Start the second row using 1/3rd of a plank. Place the cut end against the wall. Insert the tongue on the long side of the plank into the groove of the plank in the first row. Hold the plank in a 20° to 30° angle while applying pressure inward and down until they lock together. To complete the second and all successive rows, it will be necessary to lock the short end into the previous plank first before locking the long side of the plank. Angle the plank and push the tongue into the groove and adjust it until the tongue locks into place. It may be necessary to lift both planks slightly to lock the joint together. Complete the second row allowing 6.50mm expansion space at the start and end of the row.

6. After each row has been installed, gently tap the boards into the jambs of the previous row with a crushed block and a small hammer or rubber mallet to ensure that they snap together tightly and that there are no gaps between the long edges of the installed boards. Small gaps will affect the entire installation. Do not click directly on the click system.

7. Start the third row using 2/3 lengths of plank with the cut end against the wall. Afterwards complete each row using a random layout with the end joints offset by 30 mm. Plan the layout to avoid using small planks (less than 30 mm) on the wall. If it achieves a random layout, the cutting piece at the end of the row can usually be used to start the next row. Always place the cut ends against the wall and leave room for expansion.

8. Rigid vinyl planks are unique in that they can also be installed in difficult areas, such as the last row, using a drawbar or tapping block and a rubber mallet or hammer, and when installed under door trims. Use a tie bar and rubber mallet or hammer to lock the joints in the last row together. Always use the drawbar at the cutting edge of the board. If the tie bar is used directly on the factory edge, the factory edge may be damaged.

9.When installing the door trim it is necessary to slide the boards under the trim. This can easily be done by starting the row from the side of the room with the door trim and then sliding the plank into place after attaching the plank. The row can be completed by inserting the tongue into the groove or by inserting the groove into the tongue, depending on the orientation. When the plank is in the flat position, the joint can also be locked in place using a tapping block and tie bar. Use a series of taps until the joint gradually locks together.
